Research Awards
The following prizes are awarded at the GSA Annual Scientific Meeting (ASM):
Errol Maguire Award
Awarded to the best original scientific paper presented in the areas of Breast or Endocrine Surgery by any one of the following:
- General Surgery SET/GSET Trainee
- Specialist International Medical Graduate
- PFET Trainee
The prize includes the Errol Maguire Medal and up to $2,500 to be used towards attendance at the GSA ASM. Click here to download the Errol Maguire Award Policy.
John Ham Medal
This Medal is awarded for the Best Paper presented at the GSA ASM by a General Surgery Trainee or a General Surgeon (Provisional Fellow) in a clinical post who submits an abstract based on research undertaken during current or previous research towards a higher degree (including Masters or PhD research). Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons precludes eligibility for the John Ham Medal.

Noel Newton Prize
Awarded for the Best Paper presented at the GSA ASM by a General Surgery Trainee. Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons precludes eligibility for the Noel Newton Award.

GSA Research Award
Awarded to the Best Research Paper presented at the GSA ASM by a member of any one of the following groups who is involved in full time clinical practice:
- General Surgical Trainees
- International Medical Graduates
- Non-accredited Registrars
- Interns/PGY2
- Medical Students

Hernia Prize
Awarded to the best scientific research paper by a Trainee in the area of Hernia Surgery. The prize is valued at $500.

Awarded to the best original scientific paper presented in the area of Gastrointestinal Surgery. The prize is valued at $500.
