RACS Skills Courses

General Surgery Trainees are required to complete the following skills courses during their Surgical Education and Training:

  • Australian and New Zealand Surgical Skills Education and Training (ASSET) course
  • Care of the Critically Ill Surgical Skills Patient (CCrISP®) course
  • Early Management of Severe Trauma (EMST) course
  • Critical Literature Evaluation and Research (CLEAR) course

These intensive short courses provide trainees with the opportunity to undertake hands-on practice by offering a high tutor to participant ratio. Trainees are provided with comprehensive course material outlining the theoretical basis and practical applications used throughout the courses.

Surgical Trainees are given advanced access to courses ahead of all other eligible candidates. The RACS skills training department writes to SET Trainees in the lead up to each release period (January, May & September). It is the trainee's responsibility to ensure that they attend the course.
