Eligibility

  • SET 3-5 General Surgery Trainees
  • International Medical Graduates.
  • Consultants

The MOSES course aims to assist SET 3+ Trainees, IMGs, and Consultants to:

  • Make better decisions, negotiate dilemmas, and manage distractors in emergency surgery
  • Reduce error
  • Achieve better outcomes
  • Work more effectively within a team
  • Improve situational awareness
  • Provide strategies for getting out of trouble
  • Assist with Fellowship Exam preparation

Run over two full days, MOSES involves a variety of teaching methods including core lectures, skills stations, and group discussions. The course focuses on assessment and decision making skills for emergency situations, within the peri-operative period covering, but not limited to, the following:

  1. Upper Gastro Intestinal Bleed/ Gastro Intestinal Bleed
  2. Gastrectomy
  3. Bowel Obstruction
  4. Abdominal Emergency
  5. Post Thyroidectomy Bleed
  6. Laparotomy
  7. Complications after rectal surgery
  8. Intestinal Obstruction
  9. Soft Tissue Infection

With a high ration of faculty to a low ratio of participants, MOSES will offer you an excellent opportunity to develop strategy and problem solving skills for commonly encountered surgical emergencies in a small team environment, with senior General Surgical Consultants. MOSES is aimed at International Medical Graduates and senior SET Trainees, particularly Trainees and IMGs who are contemplating their Fellowship exam, and post Fellowship General Surgical Fellows/Consultants.

Advanced Breast Ultrasound Workshop

Associate Professor Ian Bennett will run an Advanced Breast Ultrasound course in Sydney, one day prior to the 2018 RACS ASC.

The workshop is designed for Surgeons who have already gained competence in breast ultrasound and fine needle biopsy techniques, but who wish to achieve proficiency in core needle techniques including standard core biopsies and vacuum assisted biopsies, and who might be interested in participating in clinical trials in breast ultrasound techniques.

The OPBS Level 1 workshop is an interactive workshop focusing on breast conservation therapy and level one oncoplastic procedures, with an emphasis on techniques that can be used in routine practice, as well as providing an introduction to breast reconstruction.

Video sessions, case discussions and demonstration of marking-up on live models in smaller groups will ensure this one-day course will be highly relevant to all breast surgeons.

2018 Junior Doctor Core Surgical Skills Course

General Surgeons Australia is hosting a Core Surgical Skills course for Junior Doctors.

Applicants to the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons, Surgical Education and Training (SET) program in General Surgery must demonstrate proficiency in a range of procedural skills and professional capabilities, to be eligible for selection.

This course is aimed at Junior Doctors who would like to increase their proficiency in these skills and works in line with the minimum requirements as per the Procedural Skills and Professional Capabilities report.

The course will be held at the state-of-the-art Monash Children’s Hospital Surgical Simulation Centre where you will be immersed in an authentic, simulated hospital and operating theatre training environment.  You will learn core and advanced laparoscopic skills, essential skills for the operating room and engage in a simulated ward environment. Please note that this course has a maximum of 24 participants and requires a minimum of 12 candidates to go ahead.

Core Skills: Level 2 Oncoplastic Surgery Workshop

The Core Skills: Level 2 Oncoplastic Surgery Workshop will provide participants with the opportunity to learn oncoplastic breast surgical procedures. This hands-on cadaveric workshop focuses on a combination of surgical techniques which aim to provide best aesthetic outcomes with optimal surgical treatment and management of breast cancer.

Suitable for:

Oncoplastic Breast and Plastic Surgeons, Fellows and SET 4-5 Trainees.

  • Mastectomy with subpectoral expander reconstruction
  • Serratus flap
  • Dissection thoracodorsal pedicle
  • Pedicled TRAM flap
  • Umbilical reconstruction
  • Mesh repair abdominal aponeurosis
  • Latissimus dorsi flap

If time permits, the practical sessions will conclude with a nipple reconstruction, focusing on new surgical advances in this procedure.
