St Vincent’s GSSE Education Program 2019

The Generic Surgical Sciences Exam is mandatory for entrance into surgical speciality training programs.

Anatomy study is regimented and usually the most enjoyable, however physiology and pathology can be unfamiliar and present a challenging syllabus.

St Vincent's has designed an intensive three day education program to kick start those difficult subjects.

The lectures are based on subjects that have the highest yield for the exam, and will be presented by expert lecturers from various medical disciplines.

CTEC’s Core Skills: General Surgery Trainee Workshop

CTEC’s Core Skills: General Surgery Trainee Workshop provides General Surgical Trainees the opportunity to learn new skills, perform a range of general surgery procedures, and attain a greater understanding of anatomy through human tissue.  This is the only General Surgery Trainee Workshop in Australia providing 100 per cent cadaveric dissection time on a range of open procedures, consolidating and enhancing anatomical knowledge and understanding.  This course precedes CTEC’s Core Skills: Vascular Surgery Workshop on Friday 29 March 2019.

Suitable for:

RACS General Surgery Trainees.  

Workshop Content Day 1:

  • Appendicectomy
  • Right hemicolectomy
  • High anterior resection/Hartmann’s
  • Cholecystectomy
  • Femoral/inguinal hernia repair
  • Splenectomy
  • Limberg flap & VY advancement
  • Carpal tunnel

Workshop Content Day 2:

Provides participants from Day 1 with first hand exposure to more advanced general surgical procedures not commonly performed by surgical registrars:

On behalf of St Vincent's Hospital and the Organising Committee, we are pleased to announce the 2019 IBD Surgical Symposium, taking place on Friday 29 March 2019, at St Vincent's Hospital, Melbourne - one day prior to the 11th National Inflammatory Bowel Disease Symposium.

This important one-day symposium, featuring national and international experts, will focus on an array of controversial and difficult areas of IBD covering both medical and surgical topics including endoscopic management of Crohn's diseasedifficult perineal Crohn's disease, and the role of the K-pouch in the 21st century.

Together, the 2019 IBD Surgical Symposium and the 11th National Inflammatory Bowel Disease Symposium will be a complete update for practitioners with an interest in IBD.

CTEC’s Core Skills: Vascular Surgery Workshop

The Core Skills: Vascular Surgery Workshop provides Vascular and General Surgical Trainees the opportunity to learn new skills in a range of vascular surgery procedures.  It is a full-day hands on cadaveric workshop with a focus on surgical dissection, with vascular anastomosis on animal tissue. It immediately follows CTEC’s Core Skills: General Surgery Trainee Workshop on Wednesday 27 and Thursday 28 March.

Suitable for:

Vascular and General Surgery Trainees SET 1 -4.

Workshop Content:

Anatomy related to:

  • The neck
  • The abdomen
  • The femoral triangle

Prior to each procedure there will be an anatomy short session and a brief discussion of specific objectives to be reached.

The following procedures will be demonstrated and performed:

  • Exposure of the common carotid artery and its bifurcation  +/- patch closure
  • Approaches to the infra-renal aorta and its branches
  • Aortic grafting
  • Vascular exposure in the femoral triangle proceeding to high saphenous ligation and profundaplasty
  • Benchtop anastomotic techniques using porcine aorta
  • Below knee amputation (subject to availability of cadaveric material)
