CTEC's Core Skills: Introduction to Laparoscopic Colorectal Surgery

This is a highly practical workshop aimed at providing RMOs, Registrars and Junior Trainees with a greater understanding and an improved level of competence in the basic techniques required for laparoscopic colorectal surgery.  It is beneficial for participants to have laparoscopic and suturing experience.

Suitable for:

RMOs, Service Registrars and Junior Trainees in General Surgery.

Workshop Content:

Practical Sessions Including Use of Animal Tissue and Simulation Models

  • Bench top stapling: principles of stapling devices (including linear / open linear and circular staplers) and end to end anastomosis
  • Small bowel anastomosis
  • Laparoscopic suturing
  • Laparoscopic appendectomy exercise
  • Laparoscopic right hemi mobilisation
  • Laparoscopic loop ileostomy formation

Demonstrations and Practical Set up for Laparoscopic Exercises

  • Trocar placement
  • Instrument choice and placement
  • Dissection
  • Manipulation
  • Clips / stapling

Presentations

  • Ergonomics
  • Entry techniques
  • Role of the assistant
  • Sealing vessels: staplers, clips and energised sealers
  • Dissection techniques and vessel control. Includes:
    • Blunt and sharp dissection
    • Energised dissection
    • Sealing vessels: staplers, clips and energised sealers
    • Patient preparation        

Case discussion: Critical points during surgery

RACS CPD Program reaccreditation will be sought for 2020.
