Together with the Australian and Aotearoa New Zealand Gastric and Oesophageal Surgery Association (AANZGOSA), the Australian and New Zealand Metabolic and Obesity Surgery Society (ANZMOSS) are pleased to welcome you to the Annual Scientific Meeting in Aotearoa New Zealand, August 2023.

After highly successful joint meetings in 2017 and 2019, we are looking forward to welcoming the profession to meet again in ?tautahi Christchurch and share our combined knowledge.

The meeting will focus on topics such as “Quality of care and measuring it”, “Optimal care in upper GI surgery”, “Enhanced upper GI surgery” and “Progress in OG cancer” all under the overarching meeting topic – Quality of Life after Surgery

CTEC 2023 - Core Skills: Laparoscopic Colorectal Surgery

A cadaveric and animal tissue workshop aimed at providing Service Registrars, Junior SET Trainees in General Surgery and GSET Trainees with greater knowledge and increased skills in anastomosis and laparoscopic colorectal surgery. 

This workshop aims to provide participants the opportunity to enhance their knowledge of more complex procedures in colorectal surgery, consolidated by practical benchtop and cadaveric sessions in laparoscopic colorectal surgical techniques and procedures. It will provide experience in procedures that participants may have received little exposure to in the clinical setting.

Suitable for:  Service Registrars, Junior SET Trainees in General Surgery and Junior GSET Trainees. It is highly recommended for participants to have laparoscopic and suturing experience , and as such is not suitable for Junior Doctors below the level of Service Registrar.

Workshop Content

Presentation Sessions:

  • Anastomotic principles – sutured anastomosis; stapled anastomosis and anastomotic leak and risk factors
  • Appendicectomy – techniques and complications
  • Right hemicolectomy – techniques and complications

Demonstration and Practical Sessions:

Demonstration – Bench Top Stapling

  • Principles of stapling and end-to-end anastomosis

Practical Session Utilising Animal Tissue – Open Exercises Bench Top

  • Small bowel anastomosis, hand sewn and stapled
  • End-to-end colon anastomosis

 Practical Session – Cadaveric Laparoscopic Procedural Exercises

  • Appendicectomy
  • Stapled caecectomy
  • Right hemi mobilisation

CPD Approvals:

Approved in the RACS CPD Program.  RACS Fellows, Specialist International Medical Graduates (SIMGs) and Surgeons participating in the RACS CPD Program can claim 1 point per hour (to a maximum of 8 points) in Educational Activities.
