CTEC 2024 - Core Skills: Workshop in Neck Dissection for Thyroid Carcinoma

This highly practical cadaveric workshop features concurrent full day Surgical Trainee level and Consultant/Fellow level practical sessions in the steps and techniques of radical neck dissection for thyroid carcinoma. Each session is tailored to provide participants with appropriate surgical training for their level of ability and skill set. The workshop includes an interactive faculty panel discussion covering expert advice and alternative radical neck dissection.

Suitable for:

Consultant/Fellow Session: Consultants and Fellows in General Surgery, Endocrine Surgery, Head and Neck Surgery.

Trainee Session:
Limited places available for RMOs, Unaccredited Registrars and SET Trainees in General Surgery and Head and Neck Surgery. 

Workshop Content:

Video Presentations and Practical Cadaveric Sessions:

  • Raise skin flaps
  • Sternocleidomastoid muscle (SCM) dissection
  • Posterior triangle dissection/thoracic duct dissection
  • Carotid sheath dissection
  • Contralateral modified radical neck dissection
  • Total thyroidectomy – lateral and superior pole dissection and inferior and recurrent nerve dissection

CTEC 2024 - Core Skills: Laparoscopic Colorectal Surgery

A cadaveric and animal tissue workshop aimed at providing Junior SET Trainees in General Surgery, Junior GSET Trainees and Unaccredited Registrars with greater knowledge and increased skills in anastomosis and laparoscopic colorectal surgery. 

This workshop aims to provide participants the opportunity to enhance their knowledge of more complex procedures in colorectal surgery, consolidated by practical benchtop and cadaveric sessions in laparoscopic colorectal surgical techniques and procedures. It will provide experience in procedures that participants may have received little exposure to in the clinical setting.

Suitable for:  

Junior SET Trainees in General Surgery and Junior GSET Trainees. It is highly recommended for participants to have laparoscopic and suturing experience, and as such is not suitable for Junior Doctors below the level of Unaccredited Registrar.

Workshop Content

Presentation Sessions:

  • Anastomotic principles – sutured anastomosis; stapled anastomosis and anastomotic leak and risk factors
  • Appendicectomy – techniques and complications
  • Right hemicolectomy – techniques and complications

Demonstration and Practical Sessions
Demonstration – Bench Top Stapling

  • Principles of stapling and end-to-end anastomosis

Practical Session Utilising Animal Tissue – Open Exercises Bench Top

  • Small bowel anastomosis, hand sewn and stapled
  • End-to-end colon anastomosis

Practical Session – Cadaveric Laparoscopic Procedural Exercises

  • Appendicectomy
  • Stapled caecectomy
  • Right hemi mobilisation

CPD Approvals:

This educational activity was approved in the 2023 and prior RACS CPD Programs. Approval is being sought for 2024 with CPD Home.
